Web Technologies: Task 1-1

Which technology am I reviewing? what is the technology?

I decided to write my first task essay on the technology and uses of HTML with the world wide web. from my research I learnt that HTML is the abbreviated term for ‘hypertext mark-up language’, the positive side of writing this essay is that because I am going into so much depth in my research, I can now memorise what HTML means and some other important keywords whilst studying computing due to its repetitive use whereas before I would hear it a few times then forget what it meant by my next lecture. I learnt the importance of HTML within web pages, the HTML tends to keep the web pages together as it is the predominant mark up language of the web written with HTML ‘tags’ to command the web content what to do and look like like in all basic websites for example <i> </i> is the basic command for a section of text written within them two boxes to be presented in italics.

Who and when was HTML developed?

According to the research I have found on several websites to back up my findings, the web and HTML was created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 whilst he was working in the computing services section at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. CERN is a European Laboratory for particle physics however he had already previously been working on writing up a HTML to work along side the internet and had figured out a a hypertext system known as ‘enquire’ that he had been using for his own personal uses. In 1988, Steve Jobs, better known as the founder of Apple inc. who has recently just passed away launched the NeXT computer and by 1990 they were running on Berners-Lee prototype. By 1993, David Raggett was also in the process of writing up a new web browser called Arena. In 1994 he presented it at a conference in Geneva and decided to also partner up with CERN.

The growth and downfalls of HTML

HTML technology has grown rapidly since the 1980’s, like we have condensed decades of computing into a few years. However I think I may have gotten slightly confused with dates in my research and would like somebody to clarify (just add a comment below) has HTML5 been released yet? as some of my research references claim that it has with the downfalls that it doesnt work on every browser if it hasn’t been upgraded whereas other references which I shall attach says that HTML5 will be released later than expected between 2014 all the way up to 2022! I may have read some of the articles wrong but it would be appreciated if somebody could explain this to me! However from the research I have found, HTML and the web has grown in ways such as how HTML has broadened its uses and now works with its allies CSS, also known as Cascading style sheets helping Html to look more presentable and also using javascript to increase the interactivity over the web. There is now an increase in the use of apps which can be used for detecting location and some applications can even be used when there is no internet connection.

some disadvantages to html In some situations we could say that we are starting to rush through the improvement of technology, the web and HTML5 as some issues stop the html working in modern web pages except internet explorer which still upgrades constantly. Internet explorer 9 offers support to html 5 however not everybody upgrades their internet browsers regularly.

Additional information related to HTML

Not only is HTML an important part of the World Wide Web but as previously mentioned, javascript is an important relation when it comes to helping the web function. Javascript provides the interactions which occur on the web pages, javascript makes the browser change when commanded so by the HTML’s actions happening on the page. CSS is also a large function of a web page as it controls a layout of more than one web page at a time without ruining any documents and you can remove any formatting in a HTML to store it in another file.
